Description
Thornton Cleveleys & District Horse Club was established in the early 1960’s by a group of local horse enthusiasts. They organised one main show each year, held on King George V’s Playing Field, using the area now occupied by the Sports Centre and car park.
The early shows commenced with two rings catering for 17 classes. In 1966 shows on the first Sunday of each month in the summer were introduced, still with two rings but additional classes. The club decided to relocate to Stanah when the construction of Sports Centre reduced the size of the showground. The larger site meant that the number of rings and classes could be increased.
The club moved to Skippool in the early 1990’s, where it was able to expand to its current size of five rings and 56 classes where we rented two fields totaling 14 acres from Wyre Borough Council.
In June 2021 rather than renew our lease with Wyre Borough Council, we took the decision to move to a new location opposite Rossall School, off Broadway in Thornton Cleveleys with bigger rings, dedicated working-in and collecting rings and more space for parking.
The current membership of Thornton Cleveleys Horse Club is in excess of 160 with ages ranging from 3 years to over 60 years. We hold a number of practice evenings throughout the Spring and Summer to encourage riders to improve their riding skills and school their horses, in addition to a points show each month from May to September; our annual summer show in July and a presentation dinner/dance in November.
